What's up with Emo anyway?

Postby amunhra » Tue May 23, 2006 12:47 pm

So I was discussing this with a friend of mine a while back when I first heard of the term "Emo" I looked it up on the net to see it's definition.

Wiki - Emo (Music) wrote:In its original incarnation, the term emo was used to describe the music of the mid-1980s Washington, DC scene and its associated bands. In later years, the term emocore, short for "emotional hardcore", was also used to describe the DC scene and some of the regional scenes that spawned from it. The term emo was derived from the fact that, on occasion, members of a band would become spontaneously and literally emotional during performances.

and then I realized some people like calling themselves Emo as they listen to Emo music... Which I just think is grunge meets depression meets punk with a pinch of goth.

I had a debate that music needs to have classifications as there are different styles of music and you wouldn't call Rap, R&B and you wouldn't call Death metal, Rock. Repeatedly I was told that music has upper categories and that lesser categories (Garage rock, Metal, Alternative, Grunge etc.) were useless.

To which I debated that Nirvana and Stone Temple Pilots were both "Rock" but rock of different sub-categories.

Keeping in mind that I was debating this with one girl that breaths Rap and a guy that breaths oldies rock. What are your thoughts on sub-categories in music?

And all in all where did this Emo generation come from? (Not to mention my little sis just went Emo on my ass and I'm flaberghasted with her new found retarded attitude :?)

Frankly, I think I'm getting old.

Emo - bands, mostly fronted by black glad, sidey fringed boys that have broken up with their girlfriends (or had their girlfriends broken up with them) and have nothing else to sing about or live for...

God add some Camo to that chick and it's my sis :stunned:

Altogether I understand the Emo phase/craze (whatever it is :P) It's like the 80's punk scene just evolved and I'm not sure if it's for the better. :?

Is that a girl or a guy with the fringe? He makes a pretty girl if it's a guy :P

What are your thoughts on sub-categories in music?
