All Tomorrow's Parties

There have been murmurs of legendary festival kingpin All Tomorrow’s Parties expanding its reach to Australia, and it’s actually happening in January 2009.

Victorian alpine resort Mt Buller will host the three-day festival from 9 to 11 January, with a truly special headliner in Nick Cave. The celebrated troubadour will be backed up by a host of international and local acts. With three days to play with, we’re expecting big things.

All Tomorrow’s Parties is responsible for the iconic Don’t Look Back concert series, which debuted in Australia earlier this year to great acclaim. This September’s ATP festival in New York is “co-curated” by My Bloody Valentine and features so-hip-it-gives-me-heartburn talent like Mercury Rev, Fuck Buttons, Dinosaur Jnr. and Thurston Moore. These guys know how it’s done!

In a post on its website, ATP laid out some tantalising details of its grand Australian entrance. Here’s the teaser of what to expect verbatim:

1. A two day event in Victoria with both on site and off site accommodation, 30+ bands, late night DJ’s, bars, cinema and much much more.

2. A series of one night stands in Brisbane culminating in one large outdoors afternoon/evening show featuring both local and international acts.

3. A single day multi-band programme performing over two days in one of the most picturesque locations Sydney has to offer.

One of the most picturesque locations Sydney has to offer, eh? Given it needs to accommodate camping, we’re thinking either Newington Armory or Cockatoo Island – both stunning venues. The former is a heritage site located on the Parramatta River, and has worked wonders for the Great Escape Festival. After its first festival trial-run, Cockatoo Island recently hosted the 2008 Biennale of Sydney in dazzling style. Either location would be a perfect fit…

All details relating to the line-up, ticketing and accommodation of all three events will be released live to the atpfestival.com website at midnight September 30th.

Hopefully it will be a much better announcement than BDO!
