Well, I had an absolute ball last night.
Got there nice and early and caught The Strange set.
I like these guys, but I always can't help tuning out about halfway through.
The structure and vibe of their songs really calls for a singer IMO.
I really liked their visuals though, which kept me interested in what they were doing a little while longer.
Also couldn't hear the keys too well, which was disappointing.
All in all a good start to the night...
I went down stairs to meet up with a friend for a drink, and when I came back Superb Lyrebird had just started, and I was so surprised to see the room absolutely packed!
I loved these guys, they were probably band of the night for me.
I wasn't impressed by the song they have on MySpace, but live put everything in perspective for me.
This project is better than the sum of it's parts IMO.
More interesting than Self and Endusk.
A lot of the stuff was reminiscent of Self, which is not surprising considering Dave is the front man for both.
What really impressed me was the keys etc. I'm a big fan of the Korg MS2000, and it blended in perfectly with what they were doing.
Also was very drawn to the bass tone. I don't know that guy, and I never managed to see Fat Slinky when they were around, but he had the tone from hell.
The drummer was fairly average. I honestly think this band would be perfect with Preston on drums, and maybe another singer, as I'm not a huge fan of Dave's vox.
But yeah, I loved their set, and can't wait to see them again (When will that be Edwin?)...
Hinge were beautiful, as usual.
I have a lot of love for these guys, and have seen them and commented on them enough to not have to go into a detailed review.
Was good to hang and chat with them too, and the set at Blink afterwards was a nice treat...
Mz Ann.
The best I've ever seen/heard it.
Soundwise musically was near perfect. You could hear every instrument perfectly.
Magdalenas vocals weren't very prominent though, which I think is a result of her singing style I guess.
Steve sounded awesome, and seemed more confident on guitar than previous times.
His playing was near flawless, and I was very impressed.
Andy and Craig, you guys know I think you're awesome, and it was so good to see you, even though we didn't get a chance to hang and talk much (We should hook up for some dinner or something with the girls soon?).
I wasn't sold on the addition of Brad until last night.
He's fantastic.
Great guy, with great stage prescence (He really looked the part!).
Your line up is now nice and solid, and I can see you guys growing togther more and more.
BIG future ahead for all of you if you play your cards right.
One thing though, I'm not really into that Bang Bang cover at all...
Afterwards, like I said, we headed to Club Blink to watch Hinge again.
They played an oldies set, which was cool, getting to hear a lot of songs we've never heard live.
I was absolutely TANKED by this point.
I haven't drunk as much as I did last night for ages.
Good times...
PS I'm hung over now though...
