Evolution has taken another step, and we’re pretty sure it’s forward. 2006 heralds the dawning of a new LILYage at the BIG DAY OUT. We introduce LILYWORLD, the glorious bastard child of the infamous, celebrated, unique and totally mental BDO institution, the LILYPAD. In 2006, the Big Day Out LILYWORLD Ambience Team will blast their insanity into a new orbit and say goodbye PJs and soft toys, and hello boiler suits, protective eyewear and clipboards; they’ve joined the ranks of the big boys with even bigger toys! The new LILYWORLD is a destination itself within BIG DAY OUT: a world within a world, an alternative desert island hideaway with performance areas, sound systems, pageantry, cocktail bars, sculptures, art installations, sideshows and air-conditioning!

When you’ve had enough of the sun, the crowds and the friends you can’t manage to shake off, escape and get shipwrecked on the shores of the LILYWORLD STAGE. A desert island complete with thatched huts, plastic palm trees, beach umbrellas and jerk chicken stands, the LILYWORLD STAGE will feature a mind-blowing selection of the most original cutting-edge acts and gags from around Australia and the world, including DJs Heavy G and Christo who will take you on a musical journey, everywhere from old school benetton to new school raggaton with the latest breaks and beats from record stores all around the globe. Your inimitable hosts Duckpond and Larry Kronick Jr. might have swapped their expensive pajamas for frumpy frocks and fishnets, but don’t expect anything less than good humour, merciless bagging and spontaneous bad taste in all its glory. K.K. Juggy returns to present some of the hottest beach-side burlesque acts in the land as well as a series of sandy sunset-strip surprises…

2006 will see the largest ever selection of special guests to appear at LILYWORLD, including an incredible array of world music and indigenous acts from around the globe, celebrating culture, lifestyle and humanity. CHANNEL ONE SOUND SYSTEM are regarded as one of Europe’s top roots and dub heavyweight sound systems, and for almost 20 years have been one of the foundation sounds of the Notting Hill Carnival. Exclusive to the Lilyworld stage hear selector MIKEY DREAD and MC RAS KAYLEB with a multitude of special effects and sirens. CHANNEL ONE SOUND SYSTEM brings the message of Rasta to the BIG DAY OUT. (All Shows) The brainchild of Tex Perkins, THE BUMHEAD ORCHESTRA is a supergroup of devoted member minstrels whose allegiance to improvisation is swayed only by the wild conductorship of Tex. (Syd, Melb, Perth Shows) Hold tight for a whirlwind of beats, breaks and imaginative loops from AFRA AND THE INCREDIBLE BEATBOX BAND, the most influential and revered beat boxers to emerge from Japan. (Sydney Show Only) Homegrown human beat box legends JOEL TURNER and TOM THUMB make a triumphant comeback to LILYWORLD after their Beatboxing world title wins in Germany this year. (Gold Coast Show only) MU is one freaked out Japanese electro punk princess, and will flip your mind with her hi-mutant sonic discoid punk performance art. (Melb Show only)

And for his very special last hurrah in LILYWORLD, the BIG DAY OUT’s favourite country and eastern crooner KAMAHL is all set to cross the Nullabor with the BDO and has agreed to lend us his kaftans for the tour. (Syd, Adel and Perth Shows)

LILYWORLD are also featuring new and upcoming artists and sound crews such as GHETTO FABULOUS, LA FIESTA SOUND SYSTEM, WINNER, THE AMAZING PHILLIPS SISTERS, CASIO BROTHERS, THE JOHNNY CASH CONVERTERS, MAN’S RUIN BURLESQUE, THE TOWN BIKES, MANJAM, KATCH AND DAVE WITH THE HYDROFUNK SOUND SYSTEM DJs, TOMAS FORD’S CABARET OF DEATH and an array of unforgetable music acts featuring the best from Africa and the Caribbean.

Each year guests from the BDO touring party can’t wait to get down and join the LILYWORLD SUPERSTAR DJ sunset beach party. Previous years have seen Afrika Bambaata, Basement Jaxx, Carl Cox, Chemical Brothers, Black Eyed Peas and the Dandy Warhols rock the decks. Who will be rolling out the beach towel and spinning the summer breaks this year?

Moving on to the mind-boggling multitude of brand spankin’ LILYWORLD attractions…While scouting global arts festivals this year, the Ambience Team stumbled across a bright pink inflatable cocktail bar at the Venice Biennale. Just what they were looking for, THE PINK HOUSE is set to become a festival icon in itself. This 8 metre high, 100% pink self-contained space will house the LILYWORLD cocktail bar serving exotic and much needed refreshments such as vodka injected oranges, and will feature video screens, ice sculptures and special one-off surprise performances.
