Amiin-Kurr
*Am getting my head around this cd at the moment, nice find Hitman*
Let's imagine Iceland as the home to a delicate music box.Inside,Bjork bellows her avant operetta,Mum chant their childish rhymes ans Sigur Ros cover people with their soft gauze of post-rock ambience.Beside Sigur Ros,four girls play with bells and strings and chimes, sometimes mimicking the beauty of their mentor, other times delivering unique pieces, such as the deep strings and lazy bells of Glamur,or with the folk guitar and hard-to-place pipes in Kolapot.
As the permanent string quartet to Sigur Ros's touring ensemble, you can forgive Amiina for their sometimes clumsy attempts at creating works of equal beauty. The theremin in Seoul is a poor replacement for Jonsi's distinct falsetto melodies. It's only on pieces such as Rugla that the girls let their vocals peep from behind the comfort of bells and chimes.
They are devotees of the Icelandic tradition of beautiful music but we will have to wait to see if Amiina grow to shape the music box,or stay content to fill it with musical influences. The Sydney Morning Herald 14-15th July.
