Make Yourself being quite commercially appealing sounds like every other band on the block...

I disagree, I think Make Yourself was the antecedent for the beginning of the "modern rock" genre (for lack of a better term). To me, Make Yourself became commercial due to the success of "Drive". While there's no denying the fact that "Drive" is a commerical sounding song, other tracks like Nowhere Fast, Make Yourself and Out From Under wouldn't of been considered "commerical" hadn't it been for the success of the album. Popularity = a commerical sound (not always, but often - also popularity is defined as Top 40 mainstream radio here). It is true, however, that Make Yourself definitely had the commerical elements that aren't there in S.C.I.E.N.C.E. Though, songs like New Skin and A Certain Shade of Green have a commerical edge to them.

An example of this would be "Chop Suey!" by System of a Down. This was a hugely successful song, therefore it has a commerical sound/appeal. If it had been as popular as SOAD's debut album, I daresay this song, and the entire Toxicity album, would not be considered commerical.

perhaps poor choice of words on my part.

Let me elaborate on it a bit more cause I think I just typed without thinking really.

I think that Incubus kind of toned down some of their rougher edges which made them a bit more appealing to me on Science. In turn it made them no different to their contemporaries in the market place in my eyes.

On the SOAD thing I really only like their first effort for the same reasons. It had a bit of roughness to it that I missed in the next releases.

Commercial does not mean bad by any stretch of the imagination.... sometimes my engrish fails me....

People have made amazing commercial records I think The Flaming Lips, Weezer, Gorillaz do it for me in that way as well. All are very commercially appealing whilst still having amazing diversity and great production and songwriting values
