Girls to face court over cabbie killing
Thursday Feb 2 08:25 AEDT

Two 14-year-old girls have been charged with the murder of a disabled Sydney taxi driver who was fatally bashed in the city's south-west.

The girls, from Liverpool and Canley Heights, were expected to appear in Lidcombe Children's Court on Thursday.

Youbert Hormozi, of Summer Hill, died on the way to Liverpool Hospital after being found beaten and lying on Parklea Parade at Canley Heights about 2am (AEDT) Tuesday.

Police said officers had arrested the girls at Strathfield train station about 10pm (AEDT) Wednesday in connection with unrelated robberies.

Inspector Patrick Wunsch, from Flemington local area command, said the girls were initially detained by CityRail transit officers over two alleged armed robberies at Yennora and Strathfield stations, in Sydney's west.

"About 9.50pm on Wednesday February 1, two young females were detained by CityRail transit officers in possession of a knife, immediately after they had (allegedly) committed an armed robbery," Insp Wunsch told AAP.

"After they were arrested and during the course of inquiries, evidence has come to light that they had (allegedly) committed the murder upon the taxi driver."

Insp Wunsch would not specify how police connected the girls to the taxi driver's death, but said the link was not established from surveillance footage from the taxi.

The girls have been charged with murder, aggravated robbery in company, stealing a motor vehicle, and two counts of robbery in company armed with a knife.

Insp Wunsch said he was "certainly surprised" at the age of the accused.

Insp Wunsch later told ABC radio the two girls were related in a "cousin-type relationship".

No further suspects were being sought in connection with Mr Hormozi's death, he said.

Mr Hormozi's employer, South Western Cabs, this week described him as a lonely man who had been robbed at gunpoint several times.

The cab company's general manager, Elis Kobti, said Mr Hormozi had twice given up his job because of illness and had only returned to driving in the past week.

"The guy is not really healthy because he had a stroke on his left side ... He was a lonely man actually, he was living on his own, and he was a very simple man," he said.

"He was robbed at gunpoint a few times and he was still going on working because he had nothing to do but drive cabs."

Two of the youngest girls to be charged with murder in NSW are behind bars following the bashing death of disabled Sydney taxi driver Youbert Hormozi.

The 14-year-old cousins are accused of repeatedly beating Mr Hormozi, of Summer Hill, and leaving him to die in a darkened street at Canley Heights, in Sydney's south-west, in the early hours of Tuesday.

The girls, of Liverpool and Canley Heights, are alleged to have stolen Mr Hormozi's mobile phone and taxi before dumping the car in nearby Bonnyrigg.

The 53-year-old divorced father of two, who had recently returned to work following a stroke, suffered massive head injuries and died on the way to Liverpool Hospital.

The girls chose not to appear at Lidcombe Children's Court, where they were refused bail on charges of murder, car stealing and aggravated robbery.

The youngest female to be charged with murder in NSW since 1993 - when official records began - was aged 13.

The youngest age of a convicted female murderer in NSW since that date is 15.

Police said the 14-year-old girls were arrested at Strathfield train station on Wednesday night after being detained by CityRail transit officials.

According to the police charge sheet, the girls had armed themselves with a knife about 8.30pm (AEDT) on Wednesday and tried to rob two people in Yennora before robbing a third person of $50 in Strathfield.

They were arrested at 9.40pm (AEDT), it said.

Police said it was during questioning about these crimes that evidence came to light of the girls' alleged involvement in Mr Hormozi's death.

Both girls were charged with murder, aggravated robbery, stealing a motor vehicle, two counts of attempted robbery armed with an offensive weapon and one count of robbery with an offensive weapon.

Both pleaded not guilty to the charges of attempted robbery armed with an offensive weapon and robbery with an offensive weapon.

The pair are yet to enter pleas for the remaining charges.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Graeme Wedge told the court, the prosecution would seek DNA evidence including mouth swabs and fingerprints to compare with any evidence from the crime scene.

The girls chose to remain in their cells as their legal aid lawyer Aaron Tang told the court they would not apply for bail.

It was formally refused by Magistrate John Crawford and the matter was adjourned to the same court on March 30.

Meanwhile, the Transport Workers Union (TWU) is asking the NSW government for an urgent review of taxi design and cab safety following Mr Hormozi's death and the bashing of another taxi driver in Sydney's south-east overnight.

TWU NSW secretary Tony Sheldon also called on the Department of Transport to urgently convene a safety committee including the police, the union and WorkCover to determine how to respond to the recent spate of assaults on taxi drivers.

"The public's safety, as well as the safety of the cab drivers, can't be jeopardised," Mr Sheldon said.
